Signing Day for BOCES 2 CTE Students
Spencerport – The Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program (FLYAP) held its fifth annual “Signing Day” ceremony Friday, Feb. 9 for Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES Career and Technical Education students. Several students from the BOCES 2 CTE Advanced Manufacturing and Residential and Commercial Electrical programs signed on for paid co-ops and job shadows at several local advanced manufacturing companies.
“As an alum of WEMOCO, I am proud to again ‘Sign Up’ the next generation of advanced manufacturing professionals through FLYAP,” said Bob Coyne, RTMA Executive Director and FLYAP Co-Creator. “The Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program gives these students a head start on their careers while still in high school through real on-the-job experience.”
Students will take their learning from the WEMOCO CTE Center to local companies to learn from machinists, tool makers, electricians and other advanced manufacturing professionals.
“BOCES 2 CTE is proud that our talented students will take their learning experiences from our industry-aligned spaces into local industries,” said BOCES 2 CTE Executive Principal Jill Slavny. “We appreciate the countywide collaborate that creates these partnerships with students.”
The Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program has connected more than 650 students to nearly 150 companies throughout the greater Rochester and Finger Lakes region since its inception in 2018. FLYAP is the only advanced manufacturing youth apprenticeship program in New York State.
The Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program was created by the Rochester Technology and Manufacturing Association (RTMA) in partnership with Monroe Community College (MCC). In addition to valuable on-the-job experience, many students receive dual enrollment college credits at no cost.
