The RTMA's History

Founded on March 13, 1945, the Rochester Technology and Manufacturing Association (RTMA) has played a pivotal role in the growth and development of the manufacturing industry in the Greater Rochester and Finger Lakes region. Initially established as the "Tool, Die, and Special Machinery Association, Inc.," RTMA has continuously supported manufacturers by addressing industry needs, fostering collaboration, and promoting innovation. Over the decades, past presidents have significantly contributed to shaping the future of manufacturing in the region.

Our Founding and Early Leadership

The association was founded by industry leaders Wilson J. Tallman, Clarence H. Meyer, Jacob R. Phillippsen, Louis C. Petz, and Leonard E. Mingus. Their mission was to unite tool and die manufacturers, promote fair industry practices, and foster friendly relations among members. The original purpose was not only to address industry challenges but also to ensure the consistent growth and success of the local manufacturing sector. RTMA’s leadership has always been forward-thinking, with each past president leaving a lasting impact on the community.

Wall of Fame and Past Presidents

The Wall of Fame honors those who have made significant contributions to the RTMA and the regional manufacturing industry. Inductees such as Karl F. Fuchs, Frank P. Gillette, and William E. Burgess are just a few of the visionaries who have led the RTMA to where it is today. The complete list of past presidents includes notable names like William Tallman, John Dessel, and Patricia Wittreich, who have guided the association’s growth over the decades. Each president’s tenure reflects their unique contributions to the industry's success and the RTMA’s lasting legacy.

The RTMA’s Ongoing Leadership

As the RTMA celebrates over 75 years of service, the organization remains committed to driving innovation and supporting manufacturers in the Rochester and Finger Lakes region. Each past president has played a vital role in shaping the association’s path forward. With current leadership under Robert J. Coyne, Executive Director, the RTMA continues to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of manufacturing while remaining rooted in the values that have sustained us for generations.
